Gr 5 UpIt's hard to imagine a more complete treatment of special food for the world's holidays. More than 136 countries are represented, with 388 recipes. The U.S. is divided into six sections with 10 recipes for regional celebrations. History behind the holiday is included where possible, as is pertinent background information on the culture represented. Many of the recipes are for side dishes, desserts, and baked goods rather than the roasted meats that are typically the main fare of a holiday feast. A discussion of different calendars used around the world is an interesting inclusion. The recipes' directions are clear and include equipment lists. Organization is by continent; a small outline map shows the country's location in its continent. Joy through the World (Allen D. Bragdon, 1985; o.p.) includes crafts and a more in-depth discussion of customs, with lots of full-color photos of foods, crafts, and festivals, but it covers fewer holidays.
